Office Body Language
Office body language interpretation may just help you get ahead if you can learn to read all the gestures, body positions, and facial expressions of all your co-workers and your boss.
Body language is very telling and does not lie like words can and frequently do. Office body language is no exception. It can emphasize, contradict, or embellish any conversation. General observation techniques will help you become an expert at reading body language.
Fifty-five percent of communication comes in the form of body language. The verbal language is only about seven percent of all communication and sometimes cannot be trusted to send messages correctly. Want to play the telephone game anyone? Body language will tell you what the other person is feeling and thinking in no uncertain terms.
For instance, if you ask your boss how you did on your last assignment and she hesitates, looks down and away, and tells you she does not have time to discuss it then you can be pretty sure that there must be a problem with your work.
Pay attention to the way people behave in the break room. Do some people meet there every day at the same time? What does their body language tell you? Are they leaning in and whispering and then laughing? They are probably all in gossip mode and are talking about other office workers.
Check out body postures and positioning of all the people who attend meetings or in the cafeteria at lunch. Does the man who just approached that woman get rebuffed and dismissed or does she smile, raise her eyebrows and open her sitting posture as he approaches? If she does the complete opposite, she most likely does not want his company and maybe wishing he would just go away and leave her in peace.
When a human being does not like something, they will do anything they can to get it out of their line of sight, closing, or squinting, the eyes are the first thing they will do to accomplish this. The eyes can speak volumes about how someone is feeling. Your pupils will dilate if you like what you see and constrict when they see what they do not like. Nobody can control the involuntary eye movements like pupil dilation and that is why the eyes are the best indicators of our true feelings.
With the correct use of eye contact, you can show the world how confident and in control you are. Try to control how much you blink though, if you blink too much or you flutter your eyelashes when communicating verbally you will seem untruthful and untrustworthy.
Touch between two people who know and trust each other is good but it can get you into trouble in the workplace and can be taken as an unwanted advance so just do not touch anyone at the work unless you are good friends and have a certain level of trust between you.
Use these tips so you can become an expert in reading office body language.
