Symptoms Of Diabetes Onset
Diabetes is a disorder that occurs when there is too much sugar in your blood stream. It is considered a metabolic disorder and affects the way our bodies use food for energy. Symptoms of diabetes onset vary and can be life-threatening.
Insulin, produced by the pancreas, helps the sugar you eat to move from the bloodstream into the cells of your body for energy. In people with diabetes, however, the pancreas has malfunctioned and either too little or no insulin is being produced, or the body does not respond correctly to the insulin that the pancreas does produce. This excess sugar in the bloodstream passes through the kidneys into the urine and is eliminated depriving the body of its main fuel source.
Studies conclude that 23.6 million people in the United States have one of the three types of diabetes. The three types of diabetes are:
Type I: Type I diabetes is referred to as an autoimmune disorder (when the body attacks itself) in which the pancreas stops working and insulin is no longer produced. Up to 10% of people with diabetes have Type I and though it is more often diagnosed in children and teens, it can occur at any time in your life. Treatment for Type I diabetes is insulin therapy along with diet and exercise changes.
Type II: Type II diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, comprising 90-95% of the population with diabetes. It occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin, or the blood cells become resistant to the insulin that is produced.
Type II diabetes is usually associated with obesity, genetics, old age, and certain ethnicities. Latinos, Native Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans are at a higher risk of developing Type II diabetes.
Gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and may or may not go away when the baby is born. It usually occurs around the 28-week mark but can occur beyond that. If you get gestational diabetes you are also at an increased risk of developing full-blown diabetes after the baby is born.
Like Type II diabetes, certain ethnic groups show a higher risk than others. It is important to follow your doctor’s advice about checking and recording your blood sugar levels throughout the rest of your pregnancy if you and your unborn baby are to stay healthy.
Many symptoms of diabetes onset look like other illnesses, like the flu, so diabetes often gets misdiagnosed at first. In Type I diabetes, symptoms usually come on rather quickly. Symptoms of Type II diabetes usually develop more gradually and some people may have no symptoms at all. Early symptom recognition and diagnosis in both types of diabetes are important to best avoid complications. Common diabetes symptoms are:
Type I diabetes:
Excessive hunger
Unexplained weight loss
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Fatigue
Irritability
Type II diabetes:
Any symptom(s) of Type I diabetes
Increased susceptibility to infection
Blurry vision
Tingling in hands and/or feet
Nausea
vomiting
Slow healing of cuts or bruises
Usually, there are very few symptoms of gestational diabetes, however, some women who develop gestational diabetes will experience symptoms similar to those of Type I and/or Type II diabetes. If gestational diabetes is suspected then your doctor will give you what is called an oral glucose tolerance test to measure plasma glucose levels.
Overall, there are numerous risk factors that can contribute to the cause of diabetes, they are:
Genetics – you can be born with a predisposition to diabetes. If you have a relative who has diabetes, you are at a higher risk.
Weight – Being overweight or obese means you have a higher risk of developing diabetes. High carb diets and a sedentary lifestyle can also be a contributing factor.
Environmental factors – Viral infections can influence blood sugar levels and can cause diabetes. Some medications you take may also cause symptoms of diabetes onset.
