Body Language Fingers Hands And Arms Oh My
Body language fingers, hands, arms, legs, feet and body position all make up the 55% of human communication we do without speaking. Only 7% of human communication is verbal, by the way. The other 38% of human communication is in something called verbal style which probably includes writing.
Whether we are agreeable to it or not our bodies provide clues to our true feelings. Our mouths can be saying one thing and our bodies will betray us and tell others what we are really saying.
Have you ever caught someone in a lie? How did you do it? You probably asked a question and they gave off some signal that they were not telling you the truth. They probably got nervous, maybe started sweating, or looked down to the floor instead of keeping eye contact with you. These are classic signs that someone is lying.
Let’s explore what some body language fingers can tell us. There are many ways that just your fingers can give away what your meaning is to so many things.
If you curl your index finger around to meet the tip of your thumb and you extend the other three fingers you are signaling that everything is OK. Your index finger can also be used to show everyone how you feel about your sports team, as in “we’re number one!” and you holding up one finger high in the air.
The same thing goes for the thumbs up sign. It can mean that everything is OK or it can mean “good job”. Thumbs down mean the exact opposite.

If you are talking to someone in an authority position they may stand over you and the table you are sitting at with their fingers splayed on the tabletop. This means they are trying to maintain control over the situation or they feel territorial. Whichever the case this is an aggressive gesture and you should proceed with caution.
If they are sitting across from you and they have their fingers laced with the thumbs up it is considered a positive sign. Touching the fingertips together and forming a steeple means you are a deep thought thinker and very confident in yourself.
In the manner of defensive postures, someone who is trying to protect themselves will cross one arm over their mid-section, place the elbow of the other arm on the wrist area and use that hand to cover their face or throat to ward off the attack.
Crossing your fingers is a wish for good luck. Everyone has done this several times throughout their lives, I’m sure. I remember as a youngster if you made a promise to someone about something but had your fingers crossed behind your back then the promise didn’t mean anything and you were, in effect, off the hook.
Of course, this is cheating and once you make a promise to do something you should keep it. No promise should ever be broken. Body language fingers are just one part of the whole body language system that we use to communicate every single day of our lives.
