Body Language Thumb Negative And Positive Communication
Everyone knows how to communicate with body language thumb signs. It’s easy and you see it everywhere you go. People giving each other a thumbs up when something good happens or a high five for the same reason. We all use our hands for communicating every day.
You all know how to give a thumbs up to a sign, right? Make a fist then stick your thumb out so it is pointing straight up. Simple. Easy. Quick. Straight to the point, so to speak. All hand signals are done to say very simple things like “way to go” or “nice job”. In places like Latin America, Greece, and Southern Italy though, the thumbs up sign is considered a negative thing.
Obviously, you cannot hold entire conversations this way unless you know ASL, which stands for American Sign Language, which is another article altogether. Body language thumb signs go beyond the simple thumbs-up sign, too. Here are a few more.
The OK sign where you extend the three outer fingers of your hand and then make a circle with your thumb and forefinger. This sign is used by those who need to signal that everything is, obviously, A-OK. Do not use this sign in France or Latin America because in those two places this sign is considered offensive. There is no need to insult someone unintentionally.
The thumbs down sign is the exact opposite of the thumbs up sign and also means the exact opposite. The thumbs down sign is used to signify displeasure with something. You can double your displeasure by using two thumbs down.
Sometimes the thumbs os used only in a supporting role when using hand signs. As in the peace sign or the victory sign. The forefinger and the middle finger are the ones doing the work and the thumb is holding the other fingers down. You hold the hand in the same position for a lot of different hand signs and gestures like pointing at someone or something.
This holds true in the “I’m number one” sign and the sign called the corna, or “bull horns”. The corna is used by many young people to show they are having a good time partying or celebrating.
Crossing your fingers is another good one. This sign is just taking the V sign and crossing one of those fingers over the other one. This signals good luck and I do not think it is offensive to anyone in the world.
Hand gestures are mostly used in situations where it would be inappropriate to use spoken language or used over a distance that would make speaking difficult as well. Teenagers may use these signs and signals to communicate during school hours either in class or passing each other in the halls.
There are many different hand signs and gestures that are used throughout every day of our lives. We communicate so much just by using our hands. These body language thumb signs, along with all the other things our bodies say and do, says and means so much more than what our actual words do it is a wonder to me that human beings even need to speak at all.
