You can experience sneaky stressors that drain your energy and you might not even be aware that these things are the cause of that because they’re just part of your day. One of the things that can drain your energy is negative self-talk.
This is what you do when you’re always predicting and anticipating the worst. You’ll think thoughts such as your boss is going to hate the progress on the project that you’re working on – or you might think that you no one likes you.
You’ll think that the ideas that you have are all dumb or that you’re not good enough or smart enough to succeed. You may tell yourself that you’re just being realistic but in reality, you’re letting this negative self-talk beat you down and drain your energy.
You can recognize some forms of negative self-talk because they’ll contain words like no, not, or never. It might be that emotional vampires are the cause of your energy drain.
You can recognize emotional vampires as the people that always seem to need you. They leave you mentally exhausted after you spend time with them. Or, you could be in a great mood and feeling good – but in their company, you feel negative emotions instead.
Some emotional vampires are users who deliberately dump their drama or needs on others, but sometimes, an emotional vampire is self-absorbed and doesn’t realize what they’re doing.
These people could be your family, spouse, your friends, or your coworkers. To identify if someone you’re around is like this, just check how you feel after being in their company.
Another sneaky stressor you’ll want to watch out for is workplace drama.
This is one of the hardest stressors to deal with because for many people, they can’t simply quit their jobs. You might be like that and just be stuck where you are. You have bills to pay or a family to feed, so you have no choice but to put up with the drama.
If that’s the case, then let your goal be to change the atmosphere. Stop engaging with the person who’s behind the drama whenever it’s possible. When you know that you always get nabbed by someone who keeps the drama going in the break room at a certain time, then go at a different time.
Workplace drama can center around division among coworkers or with the boss. It can be caused by blaming, venting, gossip, and laziness. It can also be caused by short deadlines, a lack of communication, and resistance to change.
You’ll want to do your best to stay out of workplace drama if you can or find good ways to deal with it because it can affect your job performance if you don’t.
