Little-known Fitness Dangers
A healthy diet and exercise are necessary for good health, but sometimes in the pursuit of fitness people end up hurting themselves instead. It’s important to know what to watch out for when considering taking dietary supplements or exercising so that you don’t potentially cause yourself a debilitating injury. Be careful; make sure you evaluate all the risks behind every fitness activity and properly educate yourself on the correct form to keep yourself in the gym and out of the emergency room.
Most weight-loss pills contain large doses of caffeine, which boosts your metabolism and speeds conversion of fat into energy. Some of them also contain ephedrine, the chemical extract of ephedra which has been banned in the United States after being linked to heart failure. Diet pills should generally be avoided, as they may cause heart problems.
Athletes often use something called an ECA stack when working out, which contains ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin. This allows them to work out longer than they would be able to otherwise, as it gives them a boost of energy, raises their metabolism, and dulls muscle aching and cramping. However, it’s dangerous to use these supplements without being very aware of the dosages you should be taking and your body’s capabilities. Some people who take ECA stacks and then exercise suffer from heat stroke or heart palpitations, as it can boost your heart rate and body temperature to unsafe levels.
Low carbohydrate diets make you lose weight quickly, but should only be used when your weight is causing health problems. Unfortunately, even though low carbohydrate diets allow you to eat a lot of appetizing food while still losing weight, it places a tremendous strain on your kidneys, liver, and bones.
Loss of bone density is common, and low carbohydrate diets may hasten the onset of osteoporosis. Ketosis, the state in which your body converts fat to ketones and causes you to lose weight, damages the liver and kidneys because of the high level of ketones in the blood. In addition, people who go on low carbohydrate diets for long periods of time may have trouble concentrating, as the brain must utilize ketones for energy instead of glucose.
Ever wonder why fitness centers have mirrors everywhere? They’re meant so that people who are doing exercises can easily check out if they are using the proper form. Improper form while doing exercises can cause potentially debilitating chronic back conditions, as it places too much strain on your spine and compresses your vertebrae. Twisting or shearing motions while lifting heavy weights can cause slipped disc injuries of the spine, which may require surgery. Strengthening your core muscles can help prevent back injuries while exercising.

Your muscles need rest and time to repair themselves after being exercised; a good night’s sleep is an important part of any fitness regimen since most muscle repair goes on while you are sleeping. Working out every single day is counter-productive, as your muscles will not have time to heal themselves fully, and you may end up injuring yourself.
