Reducing Stress Your Organic Resilience
Since stress is using your nutrient and your energy, you will want to be sure, you have enough so you don’t fall short.
And I mean: Do I really have to tell you that cigarettes, coffee, alcohol, or cocaine are not the kind of things that will give you more resilience to stress? No, of course not.
Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. Even though it seems like an easy escape from stress, it is not. It is only temporary relief. If it is a problem, don’t be afraid to deal with it.
Begin by reducing caffeine and sugar in your diet (that means reducing coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, sugar snacks, etc.). You will feel better, more relaxed and you will even sleep better at night.
Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. In short: eat green stuff! They contain a lot of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, everything your body needs to become resilient. And there is not much-refined sugar in them. Refined sugar and caffeine actually diminish your resistance to stress. So eating a candy bar and drinking a cup of coffee for lunch is not what will help you against your stress.
Consider also including Omega 3 in your diet (fish). If you don’t like fish, take it as a complement to your food.
Drink a lot of water. At least two liters. The link between water and stress reduction is well documented. All of your organs (brain included!) need water to function properly. If you are dehydrated, your body will stress and just half a liter dehydrated can increase your cortisol levels. And you don’t want to do that.
The first sign of dehydration is when you feel thirst. In short, you should not, ever, feel thirst. You should drink a sufficient amount, regularly all day long. Sip stress away, so to speak.
Eat healthy food, of course, but don’t martyrize yourself, eventually think in smaller portions.
A very important thing is that it is not just what you eat, which is important, but it is how you eat: Think about food as nourishment, not just as something you just gulp down between two meetings or on your way to pick up the kids.
Eat with others whenever possible. Avoid eating in front of the TV or on the computer. Take time to eat correctly and relaxed. This is especially important if you have children.
Take time to chew your food correctly and to enjoy the meal. Taste the flavors of the food. Take the time to enjoy your meal.
Get enough sleep: Sleeping will fuel your mind and body. If you are tired, you will think irrationally and this will be one step away from more stress.
Exercise regularly. No need to take a week-end on a desert island to make a triathlon, but walk to your work instead of driving (if possible), or ride a bike. Do a bit of aerobics. Just 30 minutes of exercise two or three times a week is more than enough.
If you strengthen your body, stress will not bite you that hard.
