The Guide to Painlessly Improving Your Level of Physical Fitness
Everyone knows that eating a healthy diet and exercising at least three times a week are both essential to raising your level of physical fitness, but most people have trouble changing their lifestyles to accommodate exercise and a healthy diet. How can you make it easier on yourself to make the change?
When trying to find some way to exercise, think about what you would like to do rather than what the latest craze is. Spinning classes, where people exercise on stationary bicycles while led by a fitness instructor, is the hottest new exercise craze right now – and people who promote spinning say that it’s the best way to burn calories. Don’t get sucked in by the hype and believe that one exercise is better than any other. The exercise that is most beneficial to your health is one that you will actually do on a regular basis.
You can’t improve physical fitness without eating a healthy diet. Your diet provides your body with the ability to rebuild muscle and the ability to do cardiovascular exercise; with poor nutrition, you won’t see the results you want from your fitness regimen. One of the best things you can do is to get educated about nutrition, so you can improve the dietary choices you make.
Unfortunately, the world of nutrition books if full of conflicting opinions and ideas, so it’s difficult to know whose ideas are correct. It’s important to look for books written by people who cite clinical studies as a means to back up their claims; peer-reviewed clinical studies are the only way nutritional advice can be proven correct. You should also be wary of claims that sound too good to be true; use common sense when evaluating diet information.
There are two main schools of thought relating to physical fitness and integrating a new diet and exercise plan into your life. One says that you should take small steps, slowly working exercise and diet changes into your life so that you are less likely to backslide as you gradually get used to the changes. The other says that you should make all your changes at once, totally transforming your life, and just stick to the new diet and exercise regimen with willpower, telling yourself that you will never go back to your old ways.
Proponents of the second way say that if you can make it three months on a diet, or three months with a new exercise routine, that it will be ingrained into you and you will be used to your new, healthier lifestyle.
It’s said to be similar to a smoker quitting smoking – cigarette cravings diminish over time after a smoker quits, just as a person’s cravings for an unhealthy diet diminish over a period of time after they switch to a healthier diet. Pick whatever approach you think will work best for you – if you don’t think you have enough willpower to stick to your new diet or physical fitness routine, introduce it into your life gradually until eventually your whole routine is changed.
