When Exercise is Bad for You
Even the good things in life can be bad if they’re not handled the right way. For example, exercise can steal your energy rather than giving it to you. If you exercise in excess or without knowing what you’re doing, rather than giving you energy, this can drain you – plus lead to injury and strain.
It can be bad for you when there’s a timing issue because this can also lead to stress if you’re trying to force a lengthy routine to fit into your day and you don’t have time for that.
You might have time for shorter bursts of exercise, but not an hour-long regimen, so you feel stressed trying to get to your workout. Exercise is bad for you when you’re trying to do too much, too fast.
If you suddenly decide that you’re going to use exercise to deal with stress but you’ve been a couch potato for years and then suddenly start running five miles a day, that might be bad for you, depending on your physical condition.
A good exercise routine is built around your fitness level, your schedule, and what you enjoy. These kinds of exercise routines build energy. Exercise can be bad for you when it doesn’t match your goal or what you hope to get from it.
For example, if you exercise to de-stress, but then just before bed, you start doing an intense cardio workout, you get the opposite effect. The timing of this exercise will amp your energy levels up.
If you exercise because you’ve been comparing yourself to others or someone has been critical of your weight or body shape, that’s the wrong reason and the exercise won’t be a positive task for you.
If you do it because you feel stressed that you don’t have the same strength or toned body as someone else, then the exercise will be a constant reminder of negativity.
Whenever you exercise for reasons that are self-critical or because others were critical, what you’re doing is adding to the stress rather than taking it away.
Never let exercise be a competition between you and your negative self-talk or between you and the hurtful comments others say. Don’t compare your fitness level to anyone else’s in a way that burdens you with shame.
Doing this will make you feel bad about yourself and cause you stress because you’ll feel like you’re not living up to your standard of perfection. Another way that exercise is bad for you is if you use it to avoid dealing with the stressors in your life.
If you work out until you’re bone-tired and don’t have the energy to think rather than learning stress coping skills, this will backfire. The stressors will get worse the more you push yourself away from learning how to solve or deal with them.
