If someone asked you what were the major causes of stress in your work life, chances are that you will answer things like deadlines, heavy workload, bureaucracy or some terrible boss.

And that would be a mistake!
Most people aren’t even aware of that, but decision-making is a powerful cause of stress in life. When I write “cause of stress IN life” and not “in your working life”, it is not a mistake. Every time you make a decision, whether it is about hiring an employee, schedule a meeting, choose ham or tuna for your sandwich, you actually create a state of mental tension which is a stress factor. Of course, it is more demanding to hire a new employee than to choose if you want eggs or not in your sandwich, but many small decisions are stressful too. This is the reason why it is exhausting to go shopping. It is not to walk around among other people which is tiring, but it is the almost constant decision-making state you are in when you constantly have to choose between the different prices, qualities, brands, etc.
This is the reason why you have to reduce the number of decisions you are going to make throughout the day. Have as many routines as possible. Simple routines can reduce greatly your experience of stress. Have as many routines as possible.
For many years, when I bought clothes, I bought my clothes in bunches. Five or six identical jeans, five or six identical shirts, so every morning, when dressing, I didn’t have to make decisions about what clothes to wear. Since every one of my shirts always was matching every one of my pants and of my socks, I didn’t have to think about it. I just had to grab some clothes from the closet.
